From Barron's Law Dictionary, 5th edition:

Crime of Passion: ... For instance, a man's attack on another person with an axe after that person insulted the attacker's wife might be considered a crime committed in the heat of passion.

Whereas, were it over a poker game, it would be in cold blood.

At least we know Hans' ancestors were level-headed.

Or in self-defense, if a sufficient amount of time had elapsed between the poker game and the attack. (And if you don't know what I'm talking about, ask hansandersen.)
