I've seen it once through before, and watched parts of it since here and there - but this is the first time I've rewatched it from beginning to end. It gains a lot on second viewing.
What's surprising is the seamless texture. It's much more clearly a love story - not agape but philia.

In the movie, it's clear that force of habit and sheer coincidence are the only thing holding the Bebop crew together; meanwhile, Ed and Faye are *this* close to just wandering off, and Jet is watching as his weird little family falls apart around him. And then there's Spike...
After an entire season of escalating risks, Spike goes so far off the deep end that there's nowhere further for him to push himself; his death - and SOON - is basically a foregone conclusion by the middle of the movie.
Oh, and you gotta see the rest of Noir. It's much narrower than Bebop, and yet for all its razor sharp focus, it's uneven at times. But what it does well, it does damn well.

In watching the series, though, I got much more of a sense that it's not just habit and coincidence holding them together, but an increasingly desperate need for their "weird little family." I noticed Faye pulling stunts to get them to admit that they want her around from a lot sooner than I did last time, and noticed that even Spike was paying attention while doing his usual routine.
And the egg-eating scene in "Hard luck woman" is just as good.
(But yes, I do need to see the rest of Noir, quite independently of all that)

"Love story" is being used in a very loose sense of the word.
