Only problem is that you need an account with the NYT just to read the article.

It's just the standard free registration - worth having just in general, there's good stuff there.
I think it should be a polka band.
The NYT has their story wrong. 24th MEU is a battalion strength Marine unit. Marine units don't have heavy bombers like the Air Force B-1 attached to them.
That did sound a bit strange to me. I think I may have misread the story - the B1's, I'm assuming, were acting in support of planned 24MEU activities, and not directly associated therewith.
