Hah!!

Thanks to a number of music-loving friends, and their friends as well, the mysterious music has been identified. It's Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D. The mysterious theme I remembered was the entry of the full orchestra at measure 127 of the first movement.

Victory!!

I still have that one one vinyl in my collection, beautiful piece.
How did you end up identifying it?
A friend of jonquil's, also a co-worker of ours, recognized it from my whistling.

Wow, you've been wanting to know what that piece was ever since I've known you!
Even longer than that. When I first started at Google, it had been stuck in my head for so long that I was seriously tempted to start a music search group just so I could find the damned piece. :)
Bravo!
excellent.
You should have posted your whistling/humming to LJ! Once upon a time i attempted to learn that violin concerto, and it's one of my favorite pieces.
