De mucho leer y poco dormir, se le secó el cerebro
It's a bit concerning, on the tail end of a multi-week reading binge that's left a huge heap of books by the side of my bed, to start another one and have it warn me in the prologue that it was too much reading and not enough sleep that drove the protagonist mad.
If you're talking about the book that I *think* you're talking about, then the author's a total hypocrite. Feel free to ignore his warnings and just go ahead and read the book. :-)

It sounds like the sort of thing Borges would write, but I haven't heard anything that would make me think he's a hypocrite.
Next guess would be Umberto Eco, though I haven't actually read any of his stuff.

(And Albert, you should very seriously read The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum. You would enjoy these books.)
