Viking filk

My only excuse for this is that I was reading the Heimskringla while really, really sleep-deprived, and woke up with this in my head.

The Norse are the Norse, of course (of course!),
And no-one can convert the Norse, of course;
That is, of course, unless the Norse
Is the famous Saint Olaf!

Go right to the source and ask the Norse;
They'll give you an answer with brutal force.
They're always on a viking course -
Pray to Saint Olaf!

Sea-kings get in their warring-ships
And waste the coastal plain;
But Saint Olaf will never raid -
Unless he has something to gain!

The Norse are the Norse, of course, of course,
And no-one can convert the Norse of course,
Unless they've got a Swedish force -
Here comes Saint Olaf!

(Footnote: Saint Olaf wanted to become King of Norway; to achieve this, he made a deal with King Olaf of Sweden to receive serious military backing, in exchange for Christianizing himself and Norway - the latter being important for the Swedish Olaf's European strategy. Previous attempts at Christianizing the Norse were spectacularly, and often violently, unsuccessful.)

There is no excuse for that.

(And now I'm going to be singing that all day, too!)
And the last Olaf is the best 'O-Laff!
