Good business

(On the theory that people only tend to post about a company when it's done something bad, I figured it's worth posting a review of a company that just did something good)

If you're looking for mattresses, beds, or futons in the peninsula area, I'd recommend Mancini's Sleep World in Los Altos. I went there in search of a new mattress to replace my dying one; the manager showed me around, explained the differences between the various mattresses and encouraged me to try a range, and helped me narrow down the decision. He didn't try to upsell me, but instead showed what he considered the best of his goods for my needs in several price ranges. He offered a good price, we set a delivery time (very flexible - they deliver on weekends too, which is nice) and at the appointed time the delivery showed up promptly, got everything in place, and was off.

Overall, I left this whole deal feeling like I'd just paid a fair price for good value, which isn't too common in the household durable goods business. So if any of you are looking for this sort of thing, I'd definitely recommend going here.

I had the same experience at the MSW in Mountain View. Nice place to shop (and I'm still thrilled with my bed a year later, too).

Yes, finally. :) And it's really comfortable... now it just needs an actual frame around it.

I had a similar experience in Cupertino. They just did their job really well. They didn't try to upsell me to a pillow-top (I already had a featherbed topper), and we could talk about the various merits of different stiffness mattresses.

One thing I WILL recommend is that if you got a queen-size or larger, then when you get a frame, if it doesn't have a "middle leg" to support the middle of the bed, then add one (I can bang one together for you if you tell me how tall). It greatly reduces the tendency for the bed to bow down in the middle, which is a great thing for the back.

I was considering adding one of those when I got a frame, and then I actually *got* the frame.

Straight down the middle: GIANT STEEL BAR.

Entire rest of the frame is wood.

If that bar bends, I've got bigger problems than a little sagging in the middle of my mattress.

Still, it's very amusing whenever I have to move it. Wood, wood, wood, SQUARE STEEL BEAM, wood, wood. Ikea does some surprisingly good construction sometimes.
